The Native American Parents Committee works to support native programs for schools, as well as cultural events for the entire family and community.
This committee was the start , in 1985, of the effort that has become Great Promise for American Indians. Some members, who were educators, attended the White House Conference on American Indian Education in 1991. Upon returning to Texas, they initiated work on bringing the American Indian Education Program to Austin ISD, as well as other ISDs in the state. Today, the Native American Parents Committee works closely with area school districts within a consortium administered by AISD. While the American Indian Education Program supports academic achievement, NAPC brings cultural programs to Consortium Schools and works to involve and educate all family members.
Our committee here in Central Texas functions as the Advisory Committee to the Central Texas First Nations Educational Consortium of Austin ISD supporting education needs of American Indian youth and their families.
